“Excellence in Engineering Education at the University of Aveiro” – E3 @ UA – is an initiative that intends to assess, analyze and optimize the teaching and learning process of / in / for engineering initially implemented in the UA. The project focuses on the first curricular year of engineering degrees, in the core courses of these degrees and in what is its most relevant potential: people.

The catalysts for this initiative were the FICA Project (Tools for Identification and Abandonment of the University of Aveiro) and the FEE’2016 – Fórum Educação em Engenharia (Aveiro, June 22, 2016). The results of these initiatives reinforced the relevance of teaching in engineering and the need to analyze its current context, with the aim of optimizing teaching and learning in engineering in the UA.

In this sense, and throughout the first half of 2017, a series of discussions, sharing of experiences and opinions, listening and analyzing the expectations of teachers and students of the UA were promoted. A work and reflection model was used, placing the teacher at the center of the discussion and future strategic change, as a key element for an increasingly better teaching. To that end, three dimensions were analyzed and discussed in detail: personal, institutional and external, corresponding to the position of the academic staff in relation to him/herself, his/her relationship with UA (and the AU with his own) and in their relation with the outside, respectively. After the first stage of the initiative, the E3 @ UA presented a series of immediate actions (and strategies for future action), with genesis in the teachers themselves and that are fundamentally (but not only) based on communication, favoring in a clear way the face-to-face discussion with faculty and students of the institution’s engineering courses.

After several actions developed since its first implementation, the E3@UA initiative is now in an essential stage: the effective connection to the exterior. To understand the expectations of society, namely of companies, towards engineering and its future professionals, the contact with the external dimension is being developed. The objective is to gather the view of society and the true alignment of the academy with what is expected from the engineers it trains.

“Quality teaching is the use of pedagogical techniques to produce learning outcomes for students. It involves several dimensions, including the effective design of curriculum and course content, a variety of learning contexts (including guided independent study, project-based learning, collaborative learning, experimentation, etc.), soliciting and using feedback, and effective assessment of learning outcomes. It also involves well-adapted learning environments and student support services.”
